William R. Phipps, M.D.
William R. Phipps, MD, first began treating patients with reproductive hormonal problems and performing in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures in 1984. For almost three decades his primary clinical focus has been IVF.
Dr. Phipps received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1976 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his medical degree in 1980 from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He then completed both his OB/GYN residency and reproductive endocrinology fellowship at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital at Harvard Medical School before assuming a faculty position at the University of Minnesota. At Minnesota, he made national headlines in 1991 when his patient Arlette Schweitzer became the first woman in the country to successfully serve as a gestational carrier surrogate for her daughter. A movie about the story first aired on television on Mother’s Day in 1993 titled “Labor Of Love: The Arlette Schweitzer Story.”
After leaving Minnesota, Dr. Phipps was a full-time faculty member at the University of Rochester in his native state of New York for many years before rejoining the University of Minnesota faculty in 2010. He is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. He has authored or co-authored over 60 medical publications and book chapters, is a member of several professional societies, and has served as a reviewer for many medical journals.
Dr. Phipps puts his patients first, paying close attention to details that may impact outcomes. He believes that it’s important for a patient and her partner to have a good understanding of their case, so as to optimize decision-making.
