Since the mid-1980’s embryos have successfully been frozen or cryopreserved with the first birth utilizing a frozen embryo occurring in Australia. Since that time thousands of couples have frozen embryos.
The fundamental benefit from surplus frozen embryos is that it allows for additional chances of pregnancy success without completing an additonal IVF cycle. Embryo cryopreservation can also help reduce the risk of multiple gestations and it may be utilized in patients with severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.
